Permit

What is a Heta Arbeten® permit?
Before you can start hot work, a permit for the work must be issued. The permit issuer (the client’s representative), together with the fire-watcher and the contractor of the work (hot work operative), prepares an on site risk assessment of the work. To help with this, there is a permit/checklist based on the 14 safety rules that have been developed for hot work posing a fire hazard at a temporary work site.

How are permits issued for hot work posing a fire hazard at a temporary work site?
The permit must always be issued before work starts at the site where the work will be performed. The permit issuer, together with the hot work operative and the fire-watcher, reviews the work that will be performed and identifies, assesses and decides on the fire risks that are present on site. When you agree that the work is safe to perform, a permit is issued.

This means that you have mitigated the risks that are deemed to be too great. To help with the risk assessment, a permit/checklist must be completed and all safety rules must also be reviewed. This is done preferably with the most recent version of the Fire Protection Association’s list: SBF HA-004 Permit/Checklist for Heta Arbeten® or in the digital Heta Arbeten® permit/checklist, which is available in the Heta Arbeten® app. The permit issuer, hot work operative and fire-watcher all sign the list. The work can then be started.

How long may a permit be valid?
The permit must be issued for as short a time as possible, normally not longer than one day/shift. The risk assessment in connection with issuing the permit will determine how long the conditions at the work site can be expected to remain unchanged with regard to fire risks. Permits must not be issued for longer than that. If the conditions change, the current permit must be withdrawn and a new permit issued.

Can I create your own permit/checklist?
Yes, you can. The permit/checklist must as a minimum include the points that are found in the Swedish Fire Protection Association’s permit/checklist form SBF HA-004 and meet the needs of the operations in question.

Can the permit/checklist be in the form of a digital checklist?
It is acceptable to use a digital checklist. The checklist must as a minimum include the points that are found in the Swedish Fire Protection Association’s permit/checklist form SBF HA-004 and meet the needs of the operations in question. The permit issuer, hot work operative and fire-watcher must also be able to sign the permit/checklist. The Fire Protection Association also offers a digital Heta Arbeten® permit/checklist – read more about it here.
